This talk will provide a overview of Urban Airship's core data warehouse architecture - a system designed to handle capture, intake and analysis of data for 100s of millions of mobile devices with near real time precision. The talk will touch on Urban Airship's use of HBase, Hadoop Core, ZooKeeper, Kafka as well as home-grown services. Time permitting, the talk will also cover how Urban Airship takes a lean approach to working with volumes of data including the use of ad-hoc tools such as Pig and Cascading as well as how the company leverages the data architecture for fast customer discovery and innovations.

Erik Onnen is the Hadoop and Analytics Lead at Urban Airship, the Portland-based leader in mobile application engagement services. He has over 10 years in distributed systems experience including the design and implementation of multiple "big data" systems. Erik joined Urban Airship in October of 2010, prior to that he was a Principal Engineer at Jive Software.

OVERVIEW "The main topic will be how we use Hadoop and HBase at Urban Airship for collecting and analyzing data from mobile apps. Mobile app developers integrate our client library into their apps, which send analytic events to our backend. We'll talk about the problems involved in collecting and analyzing data at scale. We use HBase for storing raw events, for feeding the analysis processes, and serving the generated reports. We use Hadoop Mapreduce for ad-hoc analysis and moving large amounts of data; we'll talk about why it's unsuitable for the kind of near-real-time incremental analysis that we do.

For the data scientists, we'll talk about our data set and types of analyses we'd like to do. Our current reports are fairly basic, but we'd like to know what factors affect user engagement with mobile push notifications and whether we can make predictions about their effectiveness."

WeatherTable is an HTML5 weather app for the iPhone. Kevin will talk about why they decided to build an app in such an established category (hint: visualization) and why they decided to do it using ClojureScript, HTML, and CSS instead of doing a native ObjectiveC app.

Matthew is a lead developer and software architect at Portland-based Platform-as-a-Service company AppFog. He was one of the core developers of AppFog's first product, PHP Fog, and led development of AppFog itself. He will be doing a show-and-tell about an instrumentation and visualization system he created to help troubleshoot and improve AppFog's Service Oriented Architecture and worldwide network of public cloud hosting services.

Java at Scale: What Works and What Doesn't Work Nearly So Well

Java gets used everywhere and for everything, a reality that can be explained by its efficiency, its portability, the productivity it offers developers, and the platform it provides for application frameworks and non-Java languages. But all is not perfect; developers struggle against Java's greatest strength: its memory management.

Cascading is an open source workflow abstraction atop Hadoop and other Big Data frameworks, with a 5+ year history of large-scale Enterprise deployments. For example, half of Twitter's total compute uses this API, along with other large use cases at eBay, Etsy, Airbnb, LinkedIn, Apple, Climate, Nokia, Factual, Telefonica, etc. Cascading leverages some aspects of functional programming so that developers can create large-scale data pipelines which are robust and easier to operationalize. There are popular DSLs in Scala (Scalding) and Clojure (Cascalog), plus Jython, JRuby, etc. Recent support also implements DSLs for ANSI SQL (Lingual) and PMML (Pattern).

This talk will describe the technology and some of the large use cases for Cascading, plus show sample apps in Scalding, Cascalog, and go into examples of ANSI SQL with Lingual and PMML with Pattern. We'll also cover material about Mesos, a cluster scheduler akin to Google's "Borg" which is used at scale by Twitter, Airbnb, Box, etc.

Drones, Big Data, and the Next Agricultural Revolution

Our Guest Speaker: Jeff Bryner ( @0x7eff ) is a 20+year infosec veteran/addict. Speaker at 3 DEF CONs, 3 Bsides, and 1 RSA (but he didn't mean it), he stands accused of re-writing everything in python, integrating security tools into 3D worlds with kinectasploit and taunting the Demo Gods in every presentation.

His Presentation: Hackers have all the fun. With slick, integrated, real-time, open suites like metasploit, armitage, SET, and lair they quickly seek out targets, share exploits, gain footholds and usually win.

The time has come for defense to get the same capabilities in an open-source platform dedicated to defense and based on modern technology. To this end the operations security group at Mozilla has developed MozDef: The Mozilla Defense Platform to take on traditional SIEM functionality of event management, alerting and correlation and expand the real-time capabilities of the defender into automated defense and shared incident response.

This presentation will cover the MozDef platform, its use of Elasticsearch and it's SIEM capabilities with as much live demo as the gods will allow.

We also plan on going deep on Kibana 4, the powerful new version of Kibana that takes advantage of the aggregations API in Elasticsearch. A rewrite from the ground up, visualizations are now powered by D3js and provides an enhances workflow capability allowing you to Discover, Visualize and Dashboard your data for insights.

An Introduction To Data Modeling Techniques in Cassandra

Steve will discuss NOSQL, CAP Theorem, eventual consistency, and data modeling techniques in Cassandra. Following that will be a demonstration of some shell commands to create and query tables. We will discuss wide and narrow rows in Cassandra, storage options, and capacity planning. We will take a brief look at Titan, a graph database that can use Cassandra as a backing store. We will take a look at partition keys, clustering columns, time series data, and how these choices affect the storage and performance of the solution. We will discuss some of the real world challenges that come up, the trade offs associated with materialized views, plus compare and contrast this to a typical relational model. Time permitting we will discuss some real world use cases, and how Nike Social is using Cassandra to meet them.

Steve Hall is a software engineer with over 15 years of experience. Steve is currently a full time engineer with Nike Digital, where he focuses on REST, social networks, and social network integration.

In cooperation with Business Oregon, the Oregon Bioscience Association has created a unique, highly targeted program to help develop the next generation of high-skilled technical and managerial talent for the state's bioscience industry. Designed in cooperation with some of the largest bioscience and Healthcare employers in Oregon, this tuition-free program is currently recruiting the first cohort of students to receive its Cloud Computing in Biomedicine professional development certificates.

The next certificate cohort is scheduled to begin June 1st, 2015.

There are only 15 openings per cohort, so the program is very selective.

Applicants with the following skills are highly desired: Basic knowledge of information technology that includes an understanding of virtualization concepts, networking concepts, Linux command line, and programming logic.

The program consists of 70-80 hours of intensive high-end classroom training during the day, modeled on Oregon Bio's highly successful BioPro training program. As part of the program, participants will meet Oregon employers seeking new talent, and receive job skills training from cloud-computing, big data and healthcare data experts.

The program will conclude with an opportunity for company hiring personnel to get to know the successful participants. Alumni will remain connected through regular networking events.

80% of the time in every project is spent on data integration: Getting the data you want the way you want it. This problem remains challenging despite 40 years of attempts to solve it. We want a reliable, low latency system that can handle varied data from wide range of data management systems. We want a solution that is easy to manage and easy to scale. Is it too much to ask?

In this presentation, we’ll discuss the basic challenges of data integration and introduce design and architecture patterns that are used to tackle these challenges. We will explore how these patterns can be implemented using Apache Kafka and share pragmatic solutions that many engineering organizations used to build fast, scalable and manageable data pipelines.

Take yourself back to 1998, when the first websites were being built. What tool did they use? For many it was a tool like Dreamweaver: expensive, complex, on-premise software. Fast forward to 2018. What do people use now? Tools like Wordpress, Wix, Weebly and Shopify. These tools are cloud-based, pay-as-you-go, and simple yet powerful. Content creation for the 3D web (including AR and VR) is high friction today. Businesses have devices and problems to solve but the content creation tools feel like we’re stuck in the 90’s.

Kyle Roche, GM of AR/VR at Amazon Web Services, will discuss how AWS leverages their cloud offerings to simplify content creation for the 3D web. Amazon Sumerian allows non-3D experts to create AR and VR content using only a web browser. Content can be easily published to end-users who then decide how they want to consume the experience. Abstract: Smart speakers and messaging apps are increasing in popularity due to their convenience, intuitive usage, and new user experiences. Companies are racing to develop voice interfaces and AI technologies in order to utilize smart speakers and messaging platforms as a sales channel.

We are introducing Grid Genie, a completely open source, multi-device, conversational commerce platform. With this technology, we can help you engineer a powerful platform to combine your Alexa skills, Google actions, and Facebook Messenger into a single seamless experience.
